The ‘R&D Center of Excellence for Integrated Microsystems’ started July 2007 as one of the Formation of Innovation Centers for Fusion of Advanced Technologies programs set up with special coordination funds for promoting science and technology, by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Tohoku University takes the lead as the main center for this research.
Tohoku University has a long history of being engaged in semiconductor research and has for 35 years been intensively promoting the research and development of ‘Microsystems’, which concentrates extensively on micro-fabrication technology.
This effort has contributed to the development of new products in wide-ranging industrial fields through disseminating research achievements, joint research or technology transfer with industry. In recent years the industry-university-government cooperation organization, ‘MEMS Park Consortium’ was established, and ongoing developmental applications such as advocating innovative markets and industrial development, have been pursued.
This program is aimed at the
The area of integration connects mechanics, electrical and electronics, materials, chemistry, electrochemistry, biotechnology and medical sciences centered on microsystems. The duration of this project is expected to be 10 years.
Our goal is to form the center to take the lead in new technological development and become a seed for next generation industries, with a core of open shared institutes working closely with companies and research institutions in various fields.
Eventually, the integrated microsystems which rise out of this program will be put to practical use in various fields such as information, communication, manufacturing and medicine, and be highly regarded by the global market as cutting-edge competitive technologies. Our goal is to make Sendai into a center of microsystem technology and industries as well a world-class center of innovation.
